Hi everyone, today I’m sharing a few pictures of my latest print for D&D: an ancient portal.

The 3D Model
The model for the ancient portal comes from EC3D Design’s Wilds of Wintertide Kickstarter. The set of models included a large assortment of scatter terrain for a winter setting.

The ancient portal prints in 3 parts:
- Portal Base
- Portal Top
- Portal Insert
Filament

I printed the model with Atomic Filament’s Starlight Gray PLA. It’s a sparkly gray that makes for the perfect base color.
I printed the portal insert with Atomic Filament’s Tropical Sea Iridescent Translucent PLA.
Painting

My paint job for the portal was just a bunch of dry brushing.

I first started with a dry brush of Delta Ceramcoat Hippo Grey. It was very hard to tell I did anything with it over the filament.

Then I followed up with a dry coat of Delta Ceramcoat Drizzle Grey and then white.
At this point, I thought the portal looked really flat and bland. To spice it up I added a new color: Delta Ceramcoat Trail Tan. I dry brushed the tan color on alternating bricks on the outer edge of the portal. Then I painted random bricks with the tan color. This made a huge difference.
Still not satisfied with the final appearance, I added some terrain turf for vegetation. I also added a couple pieces of Army Painter Battlefields Tuft to the portal.
3D Printed Ancient Portal
I pretty happy with how the Ancient Portal turned out and look forward to printing and painting more models from the Wilds of Wintertide set.
