Game Overview
One, Two Hoparoo! is a 2 player children’s game for children ages 2 and up. One, Two Hoparoo! is part of HABA’s My Very First Game Series line of board games. (The My Very First Games is a line of games targeted towards children 2 and up.) The game is designed to reinforce basic counting as well as foster an understanding of rules for young gamers.
Players take turns rolling a die to determine the number of spaces they can move their frogs forward. The objective of the game move the frog forward enough to land into the frog pond.
Game Components
One, Two Hoparoo! game contents include:
- 1 frog pond (game box)
- 1 meadow game board
- 2 frogs
- 3 building blocks
- 1 die with dots
- 1 die with dots and symbols
- Game instructions
The game box in One, Two Hoparoo! doubles as a game component: the frog pond. There’s a cardboard insert that goes into the box to create a slide for the frogs.
Component Quality
One, Two Hoparoo! includes high quality wooden game components. The cardboard pieces are very study and of good quality as well. The components are built to withstand the wear and tear of a toddler handling them.
Game Setup
The game instructions includes rules on 4 different ways to play with the game components:
- Free play
- One, two – small frog hop about (roll a die and move that many spaces forward)
- One, two – big frog hop about (a variant of the previous game mode, but with increased difficulty)
- Brave Frog counting problems up to 5 (This game mode does not use the wooden components. Instead it focuses on counting features in the game board’s artwork)
For the purposes of this review, I will focus on the primary way I play the game with my son: One, Two – small frog hop about.
The setup is simple and after a few plays young children should able to setup the game without adult assistance.
Gameplay
Players take turns rolling a die. The number of dots indicate the number of spaces to move the frog forward.
End of Game
The player wins the game once they are able to move their frog into the frog pond.
Final Thoughts
One, Two Hoparoo! is a nice game for reinforcing simple counting concepts for toddlers and preschoolers. The game is also great for teaching children how to follow rules, how to take turns and for teaching children how to lose a game gracefully.
One, Two Hoparoo! is not my favorite game in HABA’s line of My Very First Games. From an adult perspective the game is a little on the boring side. I would rather play First Orchard. My son enjoys the game but it is not requested as much as a some of the other board games in his collection.
Rating on the BGG rating scale:
- Ashley: 5 – Average – Slightly boring, take it or leave it
- Ashley’s Child (4 years old): 7 – Good – usually willing to play
I recommend One, Two Hoparoo! if you are specifically looking for a board game to reinforce basic counting. If you are just in the market for a general board game for toddlers, check out First Orchard first.
